Help Available for Domestic Abuse Victims in the UK: What You Need to Know

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, it’s important to know that help is available. Domestic abuse is never acceptable, and there are many free services in the UK designed to protect and support victims. In this blog, we’ll explain the different types of domestic abuse, how to recognise it, and where you can turn for help. We’ll also outline how Hopkins Solicitors can assist you with free legal advice and support.

Types of Domestic Abuse and How to Recognise It

Domestic abuse isn’t always in the form of physical violence. It can include emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as controlling or coercive behaviour. Domestic abuse can be a partner or a family member controlling your finances, isolating you from loved ones, constantly criticising or belittling you, or making threats. Recognising these signs is the first step towards getting help and protecting yourself.

Free Help Available for Domestic Abuse Victims in the UK

If you’re facing domestic abuse, there are several free resources available across the UK to support you:

Ask for ANI

Ask for ANI is a government initiative. If you’re in immediate danger but unable to talk openly, you can use the Ask for ANI (Action Needed Immediately) code word in participating pharmacies and job centres. Staff will recognise the request and help you access emergency support.

999 Calls and Silent Solutions

If you need to call 999 but cannot speak safely, dialling 55 during a silent call will alert the police that you need help. This is known as the ‘silent solution’. This allows emergency services to act appropriately. For example, they will make sure you are separated from your abuser if you’re in the hospital.

The Police

If you feel threatened or in immediate danger, calling the police is a critical step. They are trained to handle domestic abuse cases and can help you get to safety. Calling the police or 999 should be the first step towards getting help.

National Domestic Abuse Helpline

The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is a free helpline available 24/7 at 0808 2000 247. You can call for advice, emotional support, and help finding local resources. There is also a 24/7 chatbot available if you are unable to talk over the phone.

Women’s Aid and Refuge

These charities offer shelters, legal advice, and emotional support to those escaping abusive relationships. They can help you find safe accommodation and rebuild your life.

Clare’s Law

Clare’s Law is also known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS). This allows you to request information from the police about whether a partner has a history of domestic abuse. It’s a proactive way to protect yourself from harm.

Victim Support

Victim Support is an organisation that offers free and confidential help to victims of domestic abuse. They provide emotional support and practical advice.

Local Support Services

Many areas have local domestic abuse charities and services that can offer both immediate and long-term help. Here is a link to the local groups in Nottinghamshire.
